We've talked about diffusion and so far we've been talking about the diffusion of the solute, right?

That what we are living in is a century of idea diffusion.

So in general, diffusion if there's no barriers to the diffusion like we had here, you will have the solute go from a high concentration or hypertonic solution if they can travel to a hypotonic solution, to a hypo, where the concentration is lower.

A kind of a diffusion of innovation could be understood and predicted by the mechanism I'm going to show you now.

This is diffusion and so it's really just the spreading of particles or molecules from high concentration to low concentration areas, right?

So let me give you a famous example, a famous failure and a famous success of the law of diffusion of innovation.

Or we can monitor doctors prescribing behaviors, passively, and see how the diffusion of innovation with pharmaceuticals occurs within networks of doctors.

So, as all of you probably know, the classic way of thinking about this is the diffusion of innovation, or the adoption curve.

To understand power diffusion put this in your mind computing and communications costs have fallen a thousandfold between 1970 and the beginning of this century.

Let me say a word now about the distribution of power and how it relates to power diffusion and then pull these two types together.

And just so that we learn some other words that tend to be used with the idea of diffusion when we started off, this had a higher concentration.

But the key idea is we want to hoard as much cash as we can, because almost no startup in a new market can affect the diffusion of innovation by itself.

But I want to make it very clear diffusion is the idea of any particle going from higher concentration and spreading into a region that has a lower concentration and just spreading out.

Now, we know some of the technological facts that are driving this change in our lifestyle the uptake and diffusion of mobile devices, the exponential improvement in data storage and data processing, and the remarkable improvement in human biometric sensors.

We all sit at various places at various times on this scale, but what the law of diffusion of innovation tells us is that if you want mass market success or mass market acceptance of an idea, you cannot have it until you achieve this tipping point between 15 and 18 percent market penetration, and then the system tips.

And if we're going to deal with these two great power shifts that I've described, the power shift represented by transition among states, the power shift represented by diffusion of power away from all states, we're going to have to develop a new narrative of power in which we combine hard and soft power into strategies of smart power.
