They had to strive against natural calamities for ages.

Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!

So there were benefits in calamities benefits to pure science, as well as to applied science and medicine.

Verily, it (Hell, or their denial of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, or the Day of Resurrection) is but one of the greatest calamities.

Whose hearts are filled with fear when Allah is mentioned who patiently bear whatever may befall them (of calamities) and who perform As Salat (Iqamat as Salat), and who spend (in Allah's Cause) out of what We have provided them.

And We sent no Prophet unto any town (and they denied him), but We seized its people with suffering from extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss of health and calamities, so that they might humiliate themselves (and repent to Allah).

And verily, We will make them taste of the near torment (i.e. the torment in the life of this world, i.e. disasters, calamities, etc.) prior to the supreme torment (in the Hereafter), in order that they may (repent and) return (i.e. accept Islam).

Then We changed the evil for the good, until they increased in number and in wealth, and said Our fathers were touched with evil (loss of health and calamities) and with good (prosperity, etc.). So We seized them of a sudden while they were unaware.

They were blind and deaf in their pride, thinking themselves (to be the chosen nation of God) and thus safe from calamities. God forgave them but many of them out, of pride, again became blind and deaf. God is Well Aware of what they do.

And We have broken them (i.e. the Jews) up into various separate groups on the earth, some of them are righteous and some are away from that. And We tried them with good (blessings) and evil (calamities) in order that they might turn (to Allah's Obedience).

Say He hath power to send calamities on you, from above and below, or to cover you with confusion in party strife, giving you a taste of mutual vengeance each from the other. See how We explain the signs by various (symbols) that they may understand.

And many Prophets have fought in Allah s cause and many devoted men were with them so neither did they lose heart due to the calamities that befell them in Allah's cause, nor did they weaken and nor were they subdued and the steadfast are the beloved of Allah.
