If I had to just sort of paint a broad picture, I'd say, remember the people who were really getting into eBay in the first few years of eBay?

This is, of course, to philanthropy what eBay and Amazon are to commerce.

If I controlled the Internet, you could auction your broken heart on eBay.

And if you're wondering how much 16K is, this eBay logo here is 16K.

It actually got so bad that somebody put our country up for sale on eBay.

And in fact, in 2000, I was ready to talk about eBay, but no call.

I'd bought a replica, a really crappy replica, of the Maltese Falcon on eBay, and had downloaded enough pictures to actually have some reasonable reference.

Now, later that evening, the two self confessed tech geeks starting talking about how cool it would be if some kind of eBay for errands existed.

Can you imagine what it would be like if Amazon or eBay or Google or Microsoft or Apple really went green and you caused that to happen?

This project's only for me, and yet I went so far as to buy on eBay a 1941 Chinese San Francisco based newspaper, in order so that the bird could properly be wrapped ...

I didn't know eBay from that jar of water sitting on that piano, but I had the presence of mind to go back and talk to one of the techie kids at my center.

They're enriching others, not out of altruism but as a way of enriching themselves. eBay solved the prisoner's dilemma and created a market where none would have existed by creating a feedback mechanism that turns a prisoner's dilemma game into an assurance game.

From the mighty eBay, the grandfather of exchange marketplaces, to car sharing companies such as GoGet, where you pay a monthly fee to rent cars by the hour, to social lending platforms such as Zopa, that will take anyone in this audience with 100 dollars to lend, and match them with a borrower anywhere in the world, we're sharing and collaborating again in ways that I believe are more hip than hippie.
