Or if there had been, of the generations before you, men of a remainder forbidding corruption in the earth except a few of those whom We delivered of them but the evildoers followed the ease they were given to exult in and became sinners.

Of all the communities raised among men you are the best, enjoining the good, forbidding the wrong, and believing in God. If the people of the Book had come to believe it was best for them but only some believe, and transgressors are many.

If (only) there had been except for a few among them whom We saved among the generations that have gone before you, some that remained forbidding corruption in the land, but the wrongdoers pursued the ease they had been given to delight in and became sinners.

Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors.

So it is and whoever reveres the sacred things of Allah that is then a goodness for him in the sight of his Lord the inarticulate animals are lawful to you except those the forbidding of which is recited to you, therefore shun the filth of idols, and avoid false speech.

And the Muslim men and Muslim women are the friends of one another enjoining right and forbidding wrong, and keeping the prayer established and paying the obligatory charity, obeying Allah and His Noble Messenger these are upon whom Allah will soon have mercy indeed Allah is the Almighty, the Wise.

Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful.

O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Quran, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences, etc.) in your breasts, a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.) for the believers.
