You can't say all aquatic animals are naked, because look at the sea otter.

Well, the trawl we built, however, is 15 times finer than the regular one.

I showed him and Maria a zooplankton trawl from the gyre north of Hawaii with more plastic than plankton.

People are almost like happy when we find a big trawl of it, then you're like, no that's not right.

So while we're sampling the sea surface, these kinds of swells it can cause the trawl to jump and dive, and you don't want that.

And then in order to know up to which depth the ocean surface should be cleaned, we designed and built something that I call the multilevel trawl.

So we took the trawl out again, and we didn't have a boat, so and we tested it, and in fact they can survive over 50 Gs, which is more than enough for successful separation.

But also... this kind of sea state, causes the plastic debris to churn, and it goes down, goes downward, so your trawl will look like there's less debris on the surface, that's not because there's less debris here.

I then went on a holiday to Greece taking this manta trawl with me, which is the common device for sampling plastic, and so I had to leave home all my clothes due to low cost airlines weight limit policies.

And we trawl, which means to take something the size of a tractor trailer truck that weighs thousands and thousands of pounds, put it on a big chain, and drag it across the sea floor to stir up the bottom and catch the fish.

I thought it was a great day I was the only one who didn't get sick but then the so perfectly working trawl broke and of course we didn't quit there, because I believe you can't clean up something you don't know the size of.

So we just threw the small suitcase trawl in for seven minutes, we had to retrieve it because it was going upside down, and also in seven minutes, we already caught a lot of debris in this one, so it must be getting closer to the accumulation zone.

Well, we found of course that this material became overgrown with algae, and we needed then to develop a cleaning procedure, and we also looked at how seabirds and marine mammals interacted, and in fact you see here a sea otter that found this incredibly interesting, and would periodically work its way across this little floating water bed, and we wanted to hire this guy or train him to be able to clean the surface of these things, but that's for the future.
