One Mexico City voter said

Politicians are cashing in on public apathy.

But that's not apathy that's intentional exclusion.

I sympathize completely. Apathy is a solution.

Because if you thought the other way, and you said, let me create a problem that people would not care about, that would maximize human apathy, you would come up with global warming.

This means that the winner may have won and collected their electoral votes by small margins, winning just enough states with just enough electoral votes, but the losing candidate may have captured large voter margins in the remaining states.

And the idea was that individual citizens with phones capable of taking photos or making video would document their polling places, on the lookout for any kind of voter suppression techniques, and would upload this to a central place.

I propose to you today that apathy as we think we know it doesn't actually exist but rather, that people do care, but that we live in a world that actively discourages engagement by constantly putting obstacles and barriers in our way.

And of course not the amount of effort involved from asking every voter is paramount to running the entire election itself, which in this small group of people maybe five or ten is feasible but in a group of hundreds of millions of people isn't feasible.

My main message is if we can redefine apathy, not as some kind of internal syndrome, but as a complex web of cultural barriers that reinforces disengagement, and if we can clearly define, clearly identify what those obstacles are, and then if we can work together collectively to dismantle those obstacles, then anything is possible.

I think people have been speaking about it since shortly after the first work of literature was ever made but there's more and more talk about it and it's been propelled by diminishing readership, by what feels like an increasing apathy, or even anxiety or even mistrust of literature and the movement towards screens, everything being on a screen and what would that mean for books which aren't very well served on a screen.

liberty is usually around the corner, even for the poorest of the poor facts that can challenge cynicism and the apathy that leads to inertia, facts that tell us what's working and, more importantly, what's not, so we can fix it, facts that if we hear them and heed them could help us meet the challenge that Nelson Mandela made back in 2005, when he asked us to be that great generation that overcomes that most awful offense to humanity, extreme poverty, facts that build a powerful momentum.
