Ice and Glaciers

But imagine we're looking at an ice skating rink from above.

Does that mean no, you don't want ice, or no, you want ice?

You notice that each tray holds the exact same amount of water, but has a different number of ice cubes that it makes.

Let's take ice because ice is easier to move

The blue tray makes 8 equally sized ice cubes.

Icebergs are born when they calve off of glaciers or break off of ice shelves.

But what's important in this picture is that you have a piece of multi year ice, that big chunk of ice up in the corner.

Well sure it does, because for the pink ice tray you have 2 ice cubes for everyone that you have in the blue ice tray.

The one glacier up in Greenland that puts more ice into the global ocean than all the other glaciers in the northern hemisphere combined is the Ilulissat Glacier.

So we stopped the ship, as you do.

Now, that does make actual sence? Well sure. To go from 3 over 8, to 6 over 16, you multiply the numerator by 2 and you multiply the denominator by two.

And there's a difference between floating ice and Iandbased ice.

And even now that you know all this, we're still at the tip of the iceberg.

But anyway, off to the world of ice.

Your feet are ice cold.

That's like the difference between an ice cube floating in a glass of water, which when it melts doesn't raise the level of water in the glass, and a cube that's sitting atop a stack of ice cubes

Well, it turns into a liquid.

This is near the top of the icefall.

But this understates the seriousness of this particular problem because it doesn't show the thickness of the ice.

So this is the Russians working on the ice in the peak of the Siberian winter.

I remember March the 15th, 2000.

And to the right hand side of us was this great Khumbu Glacier.

When you're in it, you're like a rat in a maze you can't even see over the top.
