And this is of course the aorta. This is my aorta.

Then cut off his aorta,

Up into the ascending aorta.

and then cut off his aorta,

So this large vessel, the Aorta.

This is a model of my aorta.

And these coronary vessles they actually come right off the aorta here and here. So they kind of come off the aorta right away, they are the first branches off the aorta, actually.

Then We would have cut from him the aorta.

Then We would certainly have cut off his aorta.

Right it's gonna have to go away from the heart. So that's the aorta. The aorta actually has the little arch like that.

This is going to be the aorta, and the aorta is very, very wide across, and that's why I say it's a large artery.

And, from the aorta, I'm actually not drawing all the branches of the aorta, but from the aorta, it's going to go down into my belly, and it's going to branch towards my left leg and my right leg.

And then certainly should have cut off his life artery (Aorta),

then, We would surely have cut from him the aorta (vein)

This vessel I'm gonna label let's say here, as the Aorta.

And then we realized that it was actually a mirror image of the real aorta.

So now blood is gonna go through the aorta to the rest of the body.

And it's that part, the ascending aorta, which dilates and ultimately bursts, which of course is fatal.

Anesthetize you, open your chest, put you on an artificial heart and lung machine, drop your body temperature to about 18 centigrade, stop your heart, cut the aorta out, replace it with a plastic valve and a plastic aorta.

He opens you up, he accesses the aorta while your heart is beating, all at the right temperature.

The only real problem with the ascending aorta in people with Marfan syndrome is that it lacks some tensile strength.

We started by organizing image acquisition from magnetic resonance and CT imaging machines, from which to make a model of the patient's aorta.

Your aorta comes up behind your heart, it's your major artery and it was severed, so my blood was gurgling out of my mouth.

And of course it branches and splits and I haven't shown all the branches that come off the Aorta. But there are many, many of them.

And the blood comes back from the right lung and the left lung, and gets pushed back into the heart, and then gets squeezed through the aorta.

I memorized in my anatomy class the origins and exertions of every muscle, every branch of every artery that came off the aorta, differential diagnoses obscure and common.

So what happens is that the heart, before sending blood out the aorta, before just dishing it out back into the body, it actually sends the blood over to the lungs.

And in 1992, I participated in a genetic study, and found to my horror, as you can see from the slide, that my ascending aorta was not in the normal range, the green line at the bottom.

So this is your heart and coming out of your heart is the aorta and before this video I have been drawing the aorta quite differently, kind of showing its branches and here I am showing it kind of stretched out. and I'll show a few of the branches but really the point of the drawing is not to make it anatomically correct, you can tell that definitely it's not anatomically correct, because that wouldn't make any sense at all, that blood going off to one side.

So the blood from the arterial side is coming from the aorta and on the venous side it's actually not even dumping into the inferior or superior vena cava, kind of little known fact that is coming directly into the right atrium.

So lets say you have your heart here and I'm going to stretch out the aorta. It doesn't normally look this way but I'm going to try and show you what it would look like in a person that has the ability to have nice flexible arteries.

One thing that brings us close to home is we look at Dick Cheney's device, he had a device that pumped blood from an aorta to another part of the heart, and as you can see at the bottom there, it was controlled by a computer controller, and if you ever thought that software liability was very important, get one of these inside of you.
